Many guitarists have found it necessary to take a few weeks off guitar playing or in some more extreme cases several months or years. Some people think that they are immune from getting various arm, wrist and tendon related injuries because they have been playing for years with no problems - this tends not to be the case when guitarists start to concentrate their efforts on playing long periods of time on guitar for example 5 to 9 hours to increase speed or ability in heavy legato and bending.

 Avoiding Injury

Guitar players should always warm up their hands and arms with slower guitar pieces or exercises before diving straight into the more advanced, fast and complicated material, this will give the muscles a period of time to stretch and get used to the motions of playing. Playing guitar is a bit like playing a sport - if caution is not exercised in warming up muscles before taking part in a given activity then serious injury can occur. It is unwise to avoid warming up due to laziness as skipping several minutes warm-up can mean several months of guitar inactivity due to straining.

Guitar straps should always be at a comfortable level usually this is based above the waist area on the chest, playing guitar at a decent height means arms are not subjected to stretching epic lengths to access lower frets - less effort is required to be put in by the arm and therefore injury is less unlikely to happen.

Another great way to avoid injuries is to exercise regularly. There is almost always some static tension in your arms and back when you play guitar, and a great way to minimize the risk of getting hurt is to do some moderate work out a few times each week. You don't have to do a lot, but some regular exercise makes you less vulnerable to tension related injuries.

 Injuries Associated With Guitar Playing

The key worry for many Guitar players is acquiring RSI or Repetitive Strain Injury - this is similar to a burning sensation that can irritate the wrist or tendons in the hand, this is generally cause by not warming up in conjunction with playing guitar at a bad angle due to low strap height or not sitting the guitar properly on the knee.

Another injury guitar players are susceptible to is Tendonitis - this is very similar to RSI but is more localised in the Tendons or blood passages to the hand, generally caused by hard bending this causes irritation near where the fingers meet the hand.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is another injury many guitar players have acquired over the years, again it is a type of strain but it is usually located around the wrist area, where the central blood passage begins to separate out to the five fingers of the hand, such strains are again caused by playing the guitar too low or at an uncomfortable level.

 Treatment for Guitar Related Injuries

The best advice is always to seek the help of a medical professional who specialises in strains or arm injuries, failing this option being available members of GMC have also found helpful the use of:

1. Muscle Gel or Deep Heat - use of these two products generally relaxes muscles and places less strain on the arms, relieving tension on the injury and therefore helping it to heal faster.

2. Vitamin Tablets and Cod Liver Oil help provide the right vitamins etc to soothe the joints, more specifically for tendon and muscle injury Glucosamine + Chondroitin are good for building blocks of connective muscle tissue around the joints, tendons and ligaments.

3. Rest! There is no better way to heal an injury than by stopping the use of physical activity by the arm or hand with the problem. Rest stops straining and starts the rebuilding of damaged tissues and as such is probably the single most necessary factor for ending a period of injury.

Manuel "Iman" Gestapohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11738996338279157885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5914745263533241833.post-44457993421557999222010-04-16T03:06:00.005+07:002010-04-16T03:44:39.338+07:00SEYMOUR DUNCAN STOMP BOX SFX-04 TWIN TUBE MAYHEM

Boost your guitar sound's with this booster, well, pretty fantastic when I tried with my LTD Viper w/ EMG 81-85, LTD Eclipse Custom with single SD AHB-2, Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier, got Stacked with different noise...wow, fucking amazing yo...this preamp so real cool...totally awesome

APPLICATION
High-quality guitar preamp with built in boost. Harmony, in essence as we perceive it in music, is a balance of one or more notes within the given musical environment. As we think of this balance in terms of musicality, we often overlook the need for balance in the physicality of playing. Without this awareness we open ourselves up for the dissonance to overthrow the balance of harmony and cause physical discomforts.

“The best prevention is to stretch the hands and fingers before and after practicing or performing”

The most common physical threat to guitarists is RSI or Repetitive Strain Injury. There are many types of RSI (many commonly referred to as Carpel Tunnel, Tennis Elbow, or even Tendinitis) and the name says it all. Repeating particular scales or chords, especially ones that require some fancy finger-work, cause the muscles to overwork in one direction leaving the opposite muscles weak which in turn creates the imbalance which eventually leads to swelling, achiness, and arthritic pain. RSI is much like spraining a wrist or ankle, but in the case of guitarists the discomfort is usually experienced in either one of the first 3 fingers and or the palm near the thumb. Ignoring the early onset of RSI can cause some long-term difficulties, so it’s best to “nip that sucka in the bud” as soon as you feel it, or better yet start implementing some preventative measures now.

The best prevention is to stretch the hands and fingers before and after practicing or performing. There are several great resources for guitarists in regards to hand stretches but I will suggest one that is crucial. As I mention RSI is caused by over-straining the muscles in one direction, so by adding resistance and working the muscles the other way, we can correct this. So we fret pushing our fingers inward towards the neck so to work the opposite muscle group, place a rubber band over your fingertips and thumb (holding them all straight and touching the fingertips together) simply open and close the hand. The resistance of the rubber-band will help build the muscles that will balance out your fret hand (do this for your picking hand as well).

If you’re already feeling the pain of RSI then take a few days off from practicing, try to keep the fingers out straight and maybe even use an icepack (or a bag of frozen french fries from your freezer). There are many healthy ways to approach the healing process as well. Keep the joints hydrated by drinking lots of water. Supply the muscles, bones, and joints with all the nutrients they need to be strong. As a longtime student of the healing arts and dabbling herbalist I would recommend taking a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement and Glucosamine which will greatly help you heal fast and stay healthy. There are also many holistic herbs (ie: Devil’s Claw, Black Cohosh, Valerian Root, etc.) that can aide with the swelling and pain. But again, and most importantly be sure to practice proper stretching and exercise.

So practice with care and always play it safe. After all, your music is in your hands!
Manuel "Iman" Gestapohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11738996338279157885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5914745263533241833.post-57700374661254586652010-03-19T17:34:00.012+07:002010-03-19T21:35:21.081+07:00MESA/BOOGIE, Recent History
MESA/BOOGIE, Recent History

Well this review will approaching you guys about one of my fave amps that i used it, I'm pretty stuck up with this amps...Rectifying my sound what a nice collaboration with my active ESP/LTD/Washburn guitar plus Ibanez TS808, NS2 and another Reverb that will give a strong sound, hard noise from bass gain and boosting tha tube...

MESA / BOOGIE, Introduced in 1970, the Boogies proved to be absolute giant killers (in more ways than one) and began to re-define forever what a guitar amp could be and do. A small company working closely with leading players and fiercely dedicated to innovation and quality made a successful end-run around the sleeping giants of the industry

Mr. Randall Smith, the creator of Mesa/Boogie, began his career at Prune Music, a Chinese grocery store turned music shop. Working as a repair tech while his business partner and friend, David Kessner, ran the front, Smith quickly gained a reputation with the local San Francisco Bay Area musicians. This reputation brought him business from bands including the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Carlos Santana.

In 1969, Smith, as a joke, modified Barry Melton's Fender Princeton amplifier. He removed the standard 10 inch speaker and modified the chassis to fit the larger transformers that were needed by the 4-10 tweed Fender Bassman, the circuit that he had added into the tiny 12 watt Princeton. Finally, Mounting a 12 inch JBL D-120, a popular speaker of the time, Smith had created what would be the first Boogie.

Randall Smith, needing to test his creation, took the "hot-rodded" Princeton into the front store, where Carlos Santana was present. Santana "wailed through that little amp until people were blocking the sidewalk". Impressed, Santana exclaimed to Smith, "Man, that little thing really boogies!" It was this statement that brought the Boogie name to fruition.

The MESA name came about through Smith's other job, rebuilding Mercedes engines and repairing houses. He needed an 'official' sounding name through which to buy Mercedes parts and building supplies, and chose MESA Engineering. It was originally spelled with all capital letters but has been written as Mesa in recent years.

In 1971, Bassist Patrick Burke approached Randall with a proposal for a custom Bass amp. Smith was persuaded and constructed the Snakeskin Mesa 450 - Smith's first bass amplifier and the first official Mesa/Boogie product.

The real breakthrough came when Smith began building a preamp project for Lee Michaels to drive his new Crown DC-300 power amplifiers. Not knowing what signal was required to drive the power amps, Smith added an extra tube gain stage to the preamp, with 3 variable gain controls at different points in the circuit. In adding this extra gain stage, Smith had created the first high gain amplifier. He set about designing a guitar amplifier around the new principle, and in 1972 the Mark I was released.

He produced a number of custom variations on the Mark I through the late 1970s, with options including reverb, EQ, various speakers (most often Altec or ElectroVoice), koa wood jointed cabinets, and wicker grill. The Mark II was released in 1978.

In the 1980s, Mesa continued to produce combo and head amplifiers, and began production of rack power and pre-amps, developing power amplifiers such as the M180/190 and Strategy series, as well as pre-amps such as the Quad and Studio. Other models developed in the 1980s included the Mark III, the Son of Boogie, and the Studio. In the '90s, Mesa launched the smaller Dual Caliber series and the more powerful Rectifier series. Production of new models has continued into the 2000s, with models such as the Road King II, the Lone Star and Lone Star Special, and the Stiletto and Express lines.

Well, above all else, any MESA/Boogie you purchase will be an investment of lasting value. DYS formed around singer Dave Smalley, a Washington DC native attending school in Boston, and bassist Jon Anastas, previously of Decadence (see the This Is Boston Not L.A. comp). The band released a classic 12" in 1983 on SSD's XClaim label and played shows in Boston and elsewhere on the East Coast.

After a few years, DYS traded hardcore for hard rock, and added a fifth guitarist (Ross Luongo from Impact Unit) in order to be able to play complex metal riffs and solos. 1984's self-titled LP attracted major label interest, but this attention eventually brought about the demise of the band. Afterwards, Anastas played bass in Slapshot for a while, and Smalley sang for ALL and the seminal DC band Dag Nasty, before starting Down By Law.

And one of my fave's song from them is

MORE THAN FASHION, it was lecturing me a lot...and made me aware of it, read the lyrics below ;

MORE THAN FASHION [DYS]

More than X's on my hand
More than being in a straightedge band
I see no good in my mind getting fucked
A needless vacuum, I won't be sucked
Straight Mind
Razor Edge
Firm footing on a social ledge
"A party's no fun if there's no brew"
I can only feel sorry for you
'Cause I've had a blast all my life
Never needed any puke-filled strife
Straight Mind
Razor Edge
Firm footing on a social ledge
It's a way of life that says I don't need
Hangovers, freak-outs or expensive weed
Rather buy a record any day
My mind is here, not far away
Straight Mind
Razor Edge
Firm footing on a social ledge
Hangovers, freak outs or
Expensive weed
Rather buy a records any day
My mind is here, not far away
Straight Mind
Razor Edge
Firm footing on a social ledge

Some day I will cover this song with my band with featuring 3 vocalists from Jakarta SxE bands...you'll see...and full part of sing a long, and put in my record

(Iman Firmansyah Sihombing Hutasoit, BSc, MD)
VICTORIOUS

Manuel "Iman" Gestapohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11738996338279157885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5914745263533241833.post-68322644629900003152010-03-12T22:28:00.000+07:002010-03-12T22:32:20.400+07:00WHEN THE FIRST TIME HARDCORE PUNK AFFECTED MY LIFE (My brief testimonial*)
This story began in one day, around the year 1993's,
When I was first grade in the Junior High School
If not mistaken, It happened around Idul Fitri day,
when my family usually celebrates at grandma's house
for having family gathering for celebrate it

Then my older cousin called Hervi (OLD GHETTO PUNK ROCK ADDICT),
He brought a cassette copy, and try listened it to me. He said "bro...it's fuckin awesome"

In the first moment, when I saw on the cover image is only 4 bars irregular,
and i listened with carefully...and "gees man outstanding"

After that day It was resonated in my brain, was blaring so hard, and it was coming back just the word of "punk" and "rise above".
I have no idea in that moment, until when about a few months, I unpacked the late recording vinyl from my late father collections
I saw 2 pieces of vinyl, and inscribed with ; BLACK FLAG & MINOR THREAT.
Than when I listened on it ... and I said ..." wow, damn, it really awesome"
even when the recording quality is still very rave...but in that moment, was so hard hitting on me

Then ... when I met again on the other day with Hervi...

He mentioned that it was not just a punk
but HARDCORE PUNK ... and then I began to understand and try to find out more

I didn't know why I'm so interested within, even though my mom always angry and always shouting on me, she said, "Iman, Turn it off...be quiet...what a cranky noisy, for god sake!!!!#@#@#@"

But I do not know for sure,It was so ingrained on me

Then, I started to find my identity, "Who am I? and Why hardcore punk?"
But I found many logic reason during that time, and made me stronger and stronger in every further day
and I tried to make a band, and I was trying different musical streams and listening to another music

But I do not know ... I have already made my choice until the rest of my life
Until this day it flowed naturally

Even, one of friends of mine, she asked:

"Man, Why Hardcore Punk can affected your life, until you were saying if there is no HARDCORE, perhaps I can not be a doctor like nowadays, and afford it more"

And I can not say anything...so speechless

But may be it expressed enthusiasm, the lyrics of resistance, brotherhood and be realistic in our life, are the answers

And it became one of greatest principles of my life

Black Flag and Minor Threat, both of those are 2 Hardcore Punk bands when I first heard and began to love it...and keep my spirit of Hardcore Punk remain...
Got P. M. A. and hand to hand with my OGB's & also with Family crew's

Until now ... Can not be forgotten,
Because It's impossible

And I continue to listen to AGNOSTIC FRONT, DYS, SLAP SHOT, MADBALL, TEEN IDLES, 7 SECONDS, INSTED, YOUTH OF TODAY, BOLD,etc until the newest era of hardcore punk

It always in my heart...

Also when I turned on my iPod, even though, I listen to other music such as
Morrisey, Oasis, Stone Roses, Bob Marley, Jason Mraz and etc, at the end before I switching off
My iPod it will end with BLACK FLAG "RISE ABOVE" hahahaha

This is all about my greatest life experience...And still running on until now...
I wish someday, I will give this legacy to my children and keep it blooming and grow

This testimonial is dedicated to all people in this world who believe that hardcore punk inspired your life

(Iman Firmansyah S.
